Sightseeing of Timisoara : the “Little Vienna” of Romania

We invite you to explore one of the biggest cities in Romania, built on the site of an ancient Roman fortress form the 13th century. Situated on the northern bank of the Bega River, Timisoara impresses everyone by the charm of its vibrant cultural life, but also by its rich historical heritage. Take your time to discover the first European city that used the horse-drawn trams (1869) and electrical street lightning (1889) and the first Romanian city that reacted at the Revolution in 1989 against the Communist regime.

The walking tour of Timisoara begins with the downtown (quarter “Cetate”, the former “Inner City”) and presents the essential image of Timisoara: many old buildings in the styles of Art Nouveau or Baroque, large pedestrianized squares touched by the European history, the multicultural character of the city and of the Banat region. We begin with the visit of Victory Square, known also by the name of Opera Square enjoying the visit of the impressive Orthodox Cathedral, the Opera and Theatre House. Next, the Liberty Square hosts the Old City Hall with the Turkish inscription shows again the mixture of cultures, religions and civilization. The Union Square is dominated by the Catholic dome-church, the Serbian-orthodox Cathedral and by the President`s Palace – the Arts Museum.

The city will delight us with a walk through the ruins of the old fortress, constructed in the well-known Vauban Style.
